Cookie Day!
I will admit that I was originally very excited that we were finally making cookies but after this class I learned that even though they may be the most commonly baked food item in a home, it is not an easy art! I was very humbled by this process!
Chocolate Chip Cookies-
The production and execution went pretty well on these guys for my first time around and despite the excessive amount of chocolate chips, had great taste. I decided to add a little extra salt to the recipe and it definitely enhanced the flavor. I feel like in the bakeshop things tend to be really sweet and rich, the best way to cut the sweetness is to add a little extra salt. It improves the flavor of the dessert and you feel like you are eating actual food instead of a brick of sugar. Next time I make these timeless classics, I am going to space them out better so they dont stick together when baked.
Shortbread Cookies-
WHAT A DISASTER! You want to know why? To be honest, it is 100% because I did not roll the cookie evenly and as a result they were all shapes and sizes. Terrible. Half of them ended up burnt and the other half were good. They tasted excellent and I think that the salt principle applies to these guys because buttery cookies need to be livened up with a little salt. Next time I will be sure to make my dough consistent and watch them more carefully through the baking process.
WHAT I LEARNED:
Watch baking time carefully or desired results will not come out. SALT is awesome and it enhances and improves the overall taste of a cookie. Cookies are not in fact a piece of cake.. quite literally. They are not easy as pie... or ... I dont know anymore but it is a learning process!
